Bertha Ada May was born in Tampa, Florida on September 19, 1928, to Frank Austin May and Bertha Pearl May. She grew up in Tampa and attended Hillsborough High School. She moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State Women’s College and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She was married to Sam Jones and they had three children: James, Richard and Julia. Bertha taught Math and then Home Economics at Rickards High School for many years. She retired in 1992 and went on to care for grandchildren for several more years. Bertha loved to sew and create clothing, as well reading and gardening. She was a member of John Wesley Methodist Church. She was always ready and willing to help anyone whether family or friends who might need it. She enjoyed shopping for her own groceries and enjoyed her friends among the Publix staff members. Bertha is survived by one brother, Robert May of Orlando; daughter, Julia Jones Stege (Mark Stege) and son, Richard Jones. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennifer Stege Park (Sam Park) and great-grandchildren Aiden and Amelia Park; Sean Stege (Jessica Stege) and great grandchildren Carter and Gavin Stege; Sara Hardy (Chad Hardy); Stephanie Sanders and grandchildren Tristan, Mikayla, and Sophie; Ashley Benton(Jeff Benton) and great grandchildren Connor, Holden, Hunter, and Chloe. She is dearly missed. Bertha May Jones’ memorial service will be held on Monday, June 13 at 1 pm at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 1689 Old St. Augustine Road in Tallahassee. Masks are expected. Donations to the John Wesley United Methodist Church Memorial Fund would be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers.
