Betty Spivey Sellers

Betty Spivey Sellers, a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers in Tallahassee, Florida. She was the daughter of Lloyd William and Victoria Gwaltney Spivey of Windsor, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Betty grew up in a farming community on the same street as her grandparents and many other relatives who had lived there for generations. She graduated from Windsor High School, where she cultivated lifelong friendships. Betty continued her family tradition by attending Longwood College, where she joined the Tri Sigma sorority and was selected for Chi and Who’s Who in America. During her college years, she cherished the memorable experiences she had visiting VPI, especially attending the formal dances with renowned bands. The final month of her senior year, Betty was introduced to a charming and handsome VMI cadet, and the following year, they embarked on a fulfilling journey together, traveling to various locations during their military career. Betty was especially talented at meeting new people and maintaining relationships with the many friends she made at each stop along the way. Betty dedicated several years of her life to teaching second grade, served as Miss Betty on the Romper Room television show during her tenure in Savannah, Georgia, and pursued a successful career as a realtor in Florida. Upon her husband, Phil’s, retirement, they relocated to Tallahassee, where they enjoyed a fulfilling life. Betty loved her family, and they brought her much joy. Betty was an active golfing member of Golden Eagle Country Club, Christ Presbyterian Church, the Town Club, the Ya Ya’s, Garden Club, and the Newcomer’s Club. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Phillip Sellers Sr and is survived by her son, Robert Sellers (Angie), her daughter, Elizabeth Given (Robert), and her five grandchildren: Jessica, Kate, Parker, Phillip, Blair, and her cousin Ed Spivey (Randi). Her family has provided her with an unwavering source of love and support throughout her life. A memorial service is being planned, and she will be interred with husband at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Longwood University at give.longwood.edu/18/give or Big Bend Hospice.
