Gary Glenn Barr

Gary Glenn Barr Sr., 86, of Tallahassee, FL, passed away at 7:25 PM on April 13, 2023. He was born on March 9, 1937 to the late Hardie Lemuel Barr and Willoughby Anna Josephine Jacobs of Minden, Louisiana. Glenn loved life and always found the joyful details and blessings to cheer others and bring joy to everyone around him by reciting scripture, poetry and stories and by relating to everyone as though he had known them for a lifetime. His excellent memory allowed him to fully retain and quote God’s word and to recall many details of past events sometimes forgotten by others. His passions were for serving God and his family. He loved music and faithfully played the trumpet in band from a young boy. He also sang tenor in quartets and with his family for many years. Even toward the end of his life, when he heard the piano, he hurriedly made his way to it, joining in on the singing and rejoicing. He faithfully traveled to Kentucky frequently each year to Gospel of the Kingdom Campground to labor for God and His people. It seemed he never tired of working for God and there was never a complaint from his lips-only a willingness to go above and beyond and a true thankfulness for being a participant in God’s work. He worked as an Insurance Adjuster for American General Life Insurance Company in Houston, Texas for 25 years before moving to Florida for a short time, then on to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he felt God’s call on his life. He worked as a vehicle bodyman and painter for 8 years while serving the Lord and seeking God’s direction in his life. He moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1988 and served as the pastor of a small congregation from 1999 till 2019. He was faithful to God’s call and for 43 years, served and ministered to many people by helping them find refuge in God’s care. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020 which began the last chapter of his long, full life. Even in illness, his true nature was shining through with a smile, a wink or a whimsical antic of some sort which made those around him laugh and be joyful. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce Faye Barr, his former wife Ellen Stewart, his son John Keith Barr, and his daughter, Laura Michelle Schweinsberg. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Wanda Faye Barr; five brothers, Hardie Barr, Melvin (Linda) Barr, David (Phyllis) Barr, Stephen (Marcy) Barr, Donald (Sandy) Barr, one sister, Joanne Barr, three sons, Gary Glenn Barr Jr. (Robin), Jimmy (Dawn) Schweinsberg, Wesley (Tosha) Schweinsberg; two daughters, Marcia Barr Taylor, and Lucia (John) Barr Schilb, 25 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Glenn will be held at Freedom Church, 2801 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32308 on Thursday, April 27, 2023.
